IMAT 2025 was conducted on September 17th across 17 centers in Italy and 23 countries worldwide. The majority of the candidates, after the test, reported that the exam was harder than IMAT 2024, especially Biology part. In this article, I will do an in-depth article about the 2025 exam and a prediction about the cut-off scores this year.

General knowledge, Reading skills and Logical Reasoning

This part of the test consists of 9 questions. This year, the questions were of medium difficulty, with most questions being straightforward. Question 1,2 and 4 are designed to assess reading comprehension and the ability to interpret written texts, whereas question 3 relies on knowledge candidates should have about animals. Question 5 and 6 test formal logic and reasoning. Question 7 and 8 are logic puzzles, where you should imagine the situation and write diagrams to answer them. finally, question 9 required a simple time calculation. This year, calculations and probability were absent in this section.

Biology

This part consists of 23 questions, which makes a heavy part of the test. This year, compared to 2024, this section contained more detailed questions, even though they were straightforward. There was an emphasis on cellular respiration (7 questions), 3 questions in muscle tissue, 2 questions on human tissues, enzymes (definitions), and question organelles, amd 1 question on respiratory chain, digestive system, endocrine system, bones (osteoblasts), cell membrane and human metabolism. Contrary to last year, IMAT 2025 was harder in biology questions, and it was focused on a deeper understanding of concepts rather than simple definitions of last year’s exam.

Chemistry

This part has 15 questions, and this year the difficulty was approximately similar to 2024 one, but it could have been completed in a shorter time, due to lack of stoichiometry exercises. There were 2 questions on organic molecules, oxidation/reduction and acids and bases, chemical bonding, and 1 question on periodic table, ideal gas law, atomic structure, chemical reactions (Le Chatelier’s principle), chemical equilibrium, naming substances. The chemistry section required an average level of knowledge, but the entire syllabus should have been studied.

Physics and Mathematics

This section contains 13 questions in total, divided into 6 in physics and 7 in mathematics. The physics section was moderate in difficulty and slightly more difficult than 2024 paper, consisting of multiple steps solutions. The topics involved were: uniform rectilinear motion, Newton’s first and second law, equivalent resistance in circuits (both in series and parallel), current direction, variation of gravitational acceleration with distance from Earth and hydrostatic pressure forces. Whereas, the difficulty of maths questions was medium to difficult, presenting new questions not present before in IMAT. The following topics were included: polynomial identities, linear equations, inequality with square root, trigonometric inequality, cartesian product of sets, perimeter of rectangle. Probability was absent this year and Cartesian Set theory appeared for the first time. Inequalities were way different from IMAT past papers and required a deeper understanding of the concepts.

What might happen with thresholds this year?

I personally think that cut-off scores may decrease this year, due to the higher difficulty of the paper compared to IMAT 2024. But in some universities where the competition is high and due to the record number of registrations this year, cut-off scores may remain the same or have a decrease of 1-2 points. Due to reports and information I have collected from candidates, there is a high demand for South universities this year, because of the low thresholds these universities had last year. Consequently, cut-off scores for these universities may increase slightly or remain the same. However, nothing can be said with certainty until anonymous results and final ranking are released.
